To say 2016 was the best year of my life would be a huge understatement. I ran marathons, travelled the world and ticked off a lot of bucket list entries along the way. From eating at Ike’s sandwich place in San Francisco to sipping port in Lisbon and every incredible experience in between. The music reflects the eclectic, perfect year I’ve had. Lets his play:
The World is At Your Feet Little Man – Gavin Osborn
Early on in 2016 I became an uncle. The song lists all the things that Gavin’s son could do when he grows up and I have that exact hope for my little niece.
Ain’t Got Far To Go – Jess Glynne
Running all the ridiculous miles that I have this year, reaching the end at times felt unachievable. This song was an awesome morale boost and always put a spring in my step along the way.
Sing Around It – Nizlopi
The album this song comes from, Half These Songs Are About You, is my all time favourite album and at the folk festival, Towersey, I finally got to see them live. They were far and away the best live act I have ever seen.
Fight Song – Rachel Platten
The song is cheesy as hell but its lyrics always pulled me up whenever I was struggling through races. In the shadow of 2015 and taking on such a ridiculous challenge for a non-runner the words always resonate: “And I don’t really care if nobody else believes, ‘Cause I’ve still got a lot of fight left in me”.
Baba O’Riley – The Who
This song reminds me of walking through Crissy Field in the wonderful summer sun of San Francisco. Visiting San Francisco had been on bucket list since I was a kid and it did not disappoint. One of the most incredible trips of my life. I was there for three weeks but that still seemed too short a visit!
Chances – Subculture Sage
For a lot of this year my cousin became my housemate and this song’s lyrics were perfected over many coffee days and whiskey nights.
Human – Rag’n’Bone Man
An incredible song. No more, no less.
If I Succeed – Van Susans
This song was on my last year after the death of my Grandmother. In 2016, my family and I scatter her ashes and those of her husband where they first met during World War Two. Gibraltar is where they said hello and where we said goodbye to them.
Wasn’t Expecting That – Jamie Lawson
In September I got to watch one of my best friends marry an equally brilliantly bonkers person. The happiness you feel when you watch others shine, is unbridled. Back when we were just stupid kids neither of us could have expected that.
Anywhere – Passenger
Seeing them live at the Hammersmith Apollo made this song even more special then it already was.
715 CREEKS – Bon Iver
This whole album reminds me of changing this blog from Coffee and Countries to The Morning Coffee Run. The change was not an easy one to do for me but looking back now I know it was the right one. With a coffee in my hand and this album blasting out I went about changing direction.
Surprise Yourself – Jack Garratt
This song above every other sums up my year. “Just let go and surprise yourself”. You should try it too. Head over to my Facebook Page to see my year in pictures set to this song.
